Today marks one week until the two-year anniversary of the worst industrial accident to ever hit the garment industry, when the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh came crashing down. Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC) and its trade union allies and partners mark the second anniversary of disaster with a global call to action, demanding brands such as Benetton and Mango to pay up to the Rana Plaza Donors Trust Fund.

Two years after over 120 people lost their lives trapped in the Tazreen Fashions factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh, an agreement has been reached between IndustriALL Global Union and their local affiliates, Clean Clothes Campaign and C&A on a system for delivering compensation to the victims of the tragedy.

Chunji workers win right to organize at factory

Garment workers at Chunji Knit Ltd., in Dhaka, Bangladesh, can now freely organize a union, and workers fired for union activity will be reinstated, according to a Memorandum of Understanding signed by Chunji management and the Bangladesh Federation of Workers Solidarity (BFWS) in August 2014. The agreement follows pressure from the Clean Clothes Campaign, Workers Rights Consortium and Solidarity Center, demanding Chunji Knit and its buyers remediate workers' rights violations earlier this year.

Window-dressing in Bangladesh?

In Bangladesh, about 4 million garment workers produce exports worth well over US$ 20 billion every year. Their work is rewarded with subsistence wages at best, and is often carried out in poorly constructed factories. However, organising in trade unions remains hazardous, as the industry is steeped in a culture of impunity.

The Clean Clothes Campaign and the Asia Floor Wage Alliance believe that being paid less than a living wage is a violation of an individual’s human rights. This report looks at the low wages being paid across six of the major garment producing countries in Asia – Cambodia, China, Bangladesh, India, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. It also looks at the responsibilities of both state and global apparel brands and their suppliers in addressing poverty wages and the steps that must be taken immediately if the garment industry is to provide a decent life for those working within it. The report was published in 2014.

Update 11 August 2014 - Last Sunday, after 14 days of hunger strike, the Tuba group workers received their three months wages. The remaining demands still stand. Earlier that weekend, all arrested union leaders had been released.

Initial agreement reached on compensation

The fire at the nine-storey Tazreen factory in Dhaka in 2012 killed at least 112 workers, and left hundreds injured. Two years later, an initial agreement on compensation for the victims has been reached.
