Walmart and Gap – joined by many, but not all, US brands and retailers – have refused to sign the binding Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh. Instead, they offer a program that mimics the Accord rhetorically, but that omits the features that make an agreement meaningful. We explain why this scheme falls far short.

The Clean Clothes Campaign welcomes the news that 12 brands have agreed to attend meetings in Geneva to discuss the provision of long term compensation to the victims of the Rana Plaza and Tazreen factory diasters in Bangladesh. However it remains shocked at the refusal of over twenty others to take responsibility. It calls on the remaining brands, including Walmart, Benetton and Mango to reconsider and take part in the negotiations.

Although it’s been five years since the Rana Plaza garment factory collapse, in many countries survivors’ right to compensation for death and injury remains reliant on voluntary donations fuelled by media pressure.
A new report, written by worker health and safety expert Dr Rebecca Prentice, compares and draws lessons from schemes to pay compensation to injured workers and dependents of those killed in the recent Ali Enterprises, Tazreen and Rana Plaza garment factory disasters. The report calls for the introduction and strengthening of national employment injury insurance schemes that are lacking in many garment-producing countries.

April 11 marks the eighth anniversary of the tragic collapse of the Spectrum garment factory. In 2005 the illegally built extra floors within the building collapsed, killing 64 workers and injuring 80 others. The tragedy set the standard for worker compensation, yet workers of recent fatal accidents remain without compensation.

The Rana Plaza Global Day of Action on April 24 pushed brands to contribute several millions for the survivors of the Rana Plaza factory collapse. A last minute initiative secured additional donations to the Rana Plaza compensation fund, but despite this US$2.7 million is still needed. Clean Clothes Campaign calls on brands to fill the remaining funding gap by May Day.
